Stage #16; Martigny - Bourg Saint Maurice (159km) :: The 96th Tour de France / Le Tour de France :: France

After a for some riders more then welcome rest day the TDF continues with stage sixteen. As rapidly as they entered Switzerland they will leave the Switzerland to ride towards France again. Today will be an interesting stage with both St Bernard mountains to pass, with views to the Mont Blanc and Grand Combin on both sides. The first climb will show up after a few km of riding. The Col du Grand Bernard (HC,2473m, 24.4km climb to 6.2%) has it's top on the 40.5km mark, but it offers a great opportunity for a break away or powerfull climbers to take an early lead and to build a nice gap. The descent means we will enter Italy (Aosta) which features 35km downhill, 25km flat and then the next mountain towards France will show up: The Col du Petit Saint Bernard (1C,2188m, 22.6km cimb to 5.1% slope). The top of this mountain is at the 128km climb, which means the riders will have to make a 30km descent to finish. You can take some time here, or lose time. Hopefully we will see the big names today to attack the yellow jersey in this Swiss-Italian-French stage. A great short stage after a rest day, which for some riders brings more issues then fun. But we will see today how everyone enters the third week of the Tour de France. Official comment: "Forty-three years later, the Grand-Saint-Bernard Pass is back on the Tour de France’s route. The more-than 30 km climb rises to 2,469 m above sea level. Then the riders will climb the Petit-Saint-Bernard before plunging down to Bourg-Saint-Maurice. After the rest day, this superb French-Italian-Swiss stage will be pitiless!"
